LSL Senior Div 1
Dunboyne AFC 1-4 Verona
Verona began the new season with an emphatic 4-1 victory away to Dunboyne on Wednesday evening. Under new manager Declan O' Brien and coach Declan Cronin it was an excellent start to the season. On a beautiful playing surface, both sides began tentatively and the first 45 minutes were very even with scoring chances at a minimum. Dunboyne took the lead in injury time in the first half when they were awarded a penalty kick. Brian McCrossan made no mistake from the spot.
The half time break certainly benefitted Verona and they immediately took control of the game. They equalised 8 minutes into the half when Declan O' Brien got on the end of an Ian Croft corner, his header was brilliantly saved by Cian Maher, but the rebound fell to Thomas O' Rourke who finished confidently. Within 10 minutes Verona took the lead and again it followed a corner kick. Ian Croft took the kick and when the ball was played back to him he struck an unstoppable shot to the net. Five minutes later and it was 3-1 when, following an exchange of passes between O' Rourke and Croft, Sean Noble was played in for an a delightful score. Ian Croft added his second goal, on 70 minutes, to seal an excellent away victory for this exciting group of players.
Verona play Home Farm FC, on Sunday, at 2.30pm in Coolmine park.
